MACBETH ( ACT ONE SCENE TWO)

At a military camp King Duncan of Scotland his sons Malcolm and Donalbain and the thane of Lennox wait for news of the war. A captain enters, covered in so much blood he is almost unrecognizable The captain tells them of the state of the battle against the invading Norwegians and the Scottish rebels Macdonald and the thane of Cawdor. Two Scottish Nobleman have been especially brave, Macbeth ( the thane of glamis) and Banquo. Macbeth killed Macdonald “unseemed him from the nave th’chops”
The thane of Ross arrives and describes how Macbeth defeated Sweno , the Norwegian King who now begs for a truce. Duncan proclaims that the traitorous Thane of Cawdor shall be put to death and that Macbeth shall be made Thane of Cawdor

Analysis:
The blood covering the captain makes him unrecognizable monster just as Macbeth who in this scene is described  as a noble hero who is brave and loyal to his king , will be transformed into a monster a he becomes “covered” with the metaphorical blood of those he kills to achieve his ambitions
Duncan rewards and trust his subjects. This is the opposite personal ambition. Ironically though he replaces one traitor with a much worse traitor.

Key Themes : Ambition , Voilence

MACBETH ( ACT ONE SCENE ONE)

As a storm rages three witches appear speaking in rhyming paradoxical couplets: “when the battles lost and won”, “fair are foul and foul is fair”. They agree to meet again on the heath when the battle now raging ends. They plan to meet Macbeth.

Analysis:
The witches rhyming speech makes them seem inhuman, ominous and paranormal, which in fact they are.

Key themes: Fate, Nature, Unnatural

WUTHERING HEIGHTS ( CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR)

Heathcliff withdraws from the world and eats just one meal a day.  A few nights later he spends the entire night walking outside. When he returns to Wuthering Heights. Cathy remarks he is actually acting pleasantly . Heathcliff refuse all food and demands he be left entirely alone . The next morning Heathclliff scares Nelly when he seems to see an ghost . She can see nothing but it seems to her Heathcliff is communicating with it. That night Heathcliff again seems to be speaking with a ghost – Nelly hears him say “Catherine.” When Nelly speaks with Heathcliff, he reminds her of his burial wishes.
Heathcliff tells Nelly to summon the lawyer, Mr. Green. It's time to write his will and decide how to leave his property. He reminds Nelly that he made a deal with the sexton to be buried next to Catherine. Having forced her way into his room, Nelly finds Heathcliff dead, rain pouring down on him from the open window. His eyes are wide open and he has a grimace on his face, his teeth sneering. Nelly cannot close his eyes. They bury him next to Catherine. Cathy and Hareton return from their walk, and Lockwood leaves. As he walks home, he passes the three headstones – those of Edgar, Catherine, and Heathcliff

Analysis;
Heathcliff’ fast is extremely similar to Catherine’s in chapter 11. Heathcliffs refusal to eat is identical to Catherine. As he actions mirror Catherine’s he begins to see her and speak with her. He is being haunted by her just as he always wished. In his final act Heathcliff opens the window to connect with nature and with Catherine. Lockwood now see nature as quiet since nothing now stands in the way of Heathcliff or Catherine, who were themselves forces of nature in their incredible and all consuming love for each other from being together.

QOC :
“Last night I was on the threshold of hell. To-day, I am within sight of my heaven. I have  my eyes on it: hardly three feet to sever me”
Heathcliff finally achieves his goal, and his utopia. Heathcliff’s death allows him to be with Catherine and also allows Cathy to be with Hareton. The fact that joy brings Heathcliff so much death adds to the gothic quality of the novel. And although many would argue Heathcliff is going hell for what he has done , even if he does as long as his with Catherine its going to be his heaven

WUTHERING HEIGHTS ( CHAPTER THIRTY THREE)

The morning after Cathy gives Hareton the book and she and Heathcliff get in to an argument over her inheritance. Hareton takes her side. Heathcliff grabs cathy and nearly hits her but then suddenly lets go  her eyes remind him of Catherine.
The same night he sees Cathy and Hareton both remind him of Catherine. All these reminders of Catherine torment him and he admits to Nelly that he no longer much cares about taking out his revenge on Cathy and Hareton.

Analysis:

In the past , Heathcliff would have just hit Cathy but his visions are chainging him , lessing his need for revenge. Cleansing him. Being haunted by Catherine torments Heathcliffbut it also what he always wanted , so the reader lacks sympathy for him . Because Heathcliff no longer feels the need for vengence breaking the cycleof revengeallowing Cathy and Hareton to live in peace.

WUTHERING HEIGHTS ( CHAPTER THIRTY TWO)

Six months later ,Lockwood returns to Wuthering Height. He finds that Nelly now lives there. Cathy give Hareton a book and promises to teach him to read and promises not to mock him. Nelly says that the two have come to love each other and looks forward to a eventual marriage between them.

Ananlysis :

Hareton and cathy are similar to Heathcliff and Catherine with one Crucial difference: Hareton and Cathyboth learn to feel remorse for their aggressive or condesending actions.Cathy has always been attracted to men she can mother but unlike Linton , who was weak and sniveling Hareton is her equal. Cathy realizes this as seen through her offering to teach him how to read. Rather than look down at him because of status she now see his potential. She now sees beyond class and toghether the two of them fina a balance betweeen nature and civilization.

Hreton ashamed gathers the books and throws them in the fire. Heathcliff returns and says as soon as he enters Hareton bears such a striking resemblance to Catherine that it cause him physical and emotional pain to even look at him. As Lockwood looks back on what what would have been if Catherine fell in love him and moved away from Wuthering Heights .

Analysis :

As futrue events show Hareton has gathered cathy's books because he wants to learn to read and become more civzilized by doing this Bronte gives the reader a glince of hope , of a happy ending , which is short and brief for Hareton gives up .
Also Heathcliff's wish has come true , Cathy is haunting him , Bronte does this to remind the reader to be careful for what they wish for.

WUTHERING HEIGHTS ( CHAPTER THIRTY)

Zillah briefly takes over the narrative: Back at the Heights, Cathy tries to convince Heathcliff that his son is dying. Heathcliff doesn't care and won't spend the money for a doctor.Linton dies. Cathy doesn't come out of her room for two weeks. Finally Heathcliff goes upstairs to show her Linton's will. Linton has left everything to his father, which means Cathy gets nothing.Hareton, Cathy, and Heathcliff are now the only ones left at the Heights. Cathy tells Hareton that he has been cruel to side with Heathcliff. He tells her that he tried to help. Nelly's story finally ends. Lockwood announces his plan to go to the Heights and give Heathcliff notice that he will leave the Grange for London.

QOC:

"Heathcliff went up once to show her Linton's will. He had bequeathed the whole of his , and what had been her moveable property to his farther"

As a woman, Cathy is trapped without legal rights to defend herself from Heathcliff. At this point , the novel seems to be setting up the possibility that Lockwood  will save Cathy from her fate.

"I shall spend the next six months in London .. I would not pass another winter here for much"

BUT ..Lockwood doesnt do this because he is unable to act bodly , recklessly and with passion . He is a civilized city man who dislikes so much emotion. He finds it weird and strange so rather than try save the beautiful Cathy , and win her love he goes to London. Inforcing that civilized world is not always the best world.

WUTHERING HEIGHTS ( CHAPTER TWENTY NINE)

Now that her master is dead, Nelly hopes to stay at the Grange. Heathcliff has other plans, storming into the house as its new master. He announces immediately his intention of bringing Cathy home to the Heights despite her desire to stay at the Grange with Nelly.
Ever since Linton helped Cathy escape, Heathcliff has punished him with his very presence. Heathcliff has a plan to rent out the Grange and needs Cathy at Wuthering Heights to help around the house.
Heathcliff and Cathy argue over Linton: she claims he is all she loves in the world; Heathcliff announces Linton's intentions to be an abusive husband.
In his sorrow and rage, Heathcliff briefly takes over the narrative. Heathcliff tells Nelly that he persuaded the sexton to dig up Catherine's grave. He stares at her dusty corpse and bribes the sexton to put his body next to hers when he dies.

QOC :

“However miserable you make us we shall still have the revenge of thinking that your cruelty arises from your greater misery”

Cathy’s response shows that she recognizes that Heathciff’s quest for revenge has corrupted him. What he always wanted to be was with Catherine and revenge didn’t get him that.

“I bribed the sexton to pull it away, when I’m lair there and slide mine out too. I’ll have it made so, and then by the time Linton gets to us, He’ll not know which is which”

Cathy’s comment is clearly right and hits a spot with Heathcliff. Heathcliff’s love for Catherine remains the sole important thing for him, It is so important that he is willing to disturb her grave in order to find a way to be close to her if no in life in death.
