Edgar allows Cathy to meet with Linton, as long as they stay on Grange property.
Nelly and Cathy end up going past the property line and encounter Linton looking worse than ever. He is feeble, pale, and unable to follow the conversation. Something is up – Linton is very worried about what Heathcliff thinks of his behavior toward Cathy.
Linton falls asleep and Cathy is now eager to head back to the Grange. They take off just as Heathcliff arrives.
QOC:
“I’m tired’ he interrupted hurriedly “Its too hot for walking , let us rest here. And in the morning , I often feel sick”
Linton is now so weak that he can barely stand nature at all. He needs the protection of the house or civilization to keep him alive. Once again Bronte emphasizes the contrast between Linton and Cathy , trying to show how wrong they are for each other.
“He glanced fearfully towards the Heights”
Also Linton’s glances toward Wuthering Heights convey his nervousness about Heathcliff and make it clear that the meeting with Cathy is only partially his own idea.
