WUTHERING HEIGHTS ( CHAPTER EIGHT)

During the following summer, Frances gives birth to Hareton, but Frances dies a week later because she had been suffering from consumption. Nelly is expected to take complete control of the newborn. Hindley is distraught over the death of his wife and becomes tyrannical. Heatchliff takes delight in the downfall of Hindley.
Catherine begins "to adopt a double character," behaving one way with Heathcliff and another with the Lintons. Heathcliff begins keeping track of how much time she is spending with Edgar and the Lintons, and he is angry that Catherine belittles him when he confronts her with this. Edgar arrives at the end of the argument. Later on Catherine is arguing with Nelly and pinches her , then lies about it .Edgar then tries to intervene but Catherine boxes his ears. This is the first time he has seen the wild side of Catherine and he tells her that he must leave; whilst leaving he sees her thorugh the window and is drawn back by her beauty.

QOC:

“Doubtless Catherine marked the difference between here friends as one came in and the other went out. The contrast resembled what you see in exchanging a bleak hilly , coal country for a beautiful fertile valley; and his voice greeting were as opposite as his aspect”

This must be the best quote in the book ! It embraces the saying of "Dont judge a book by its cover" , Although Heathcliff physical image is similar to that of a bleak hilly , he has the inside of a beautiful fertile valley , and vice versa for Edgar. By doing this Bronte further inforces the reader to look past the reader's percepetion of the character. Also the use of nature and the word "fertile" creates an image of life and reproduction , although physically (money and satatus) Heathcliff may not be able to prouduce and nurture his life and childeren , his inside is the perfect and furtile breeding land. Thus giving the reader an insigh to how catherine feels , what is more important , physical possesions or the mentailty.
